Black Sclera Contact Lenses

From LoveToKnow Sunglasses

Black sclera contact lenses are arguably some of the most dramatic contacts available on the market today.

What Are Black Sclera Contact Lenses?

If you've never seen black sclera contact lenses, you may be a bit curious as to what they look like. As amazing at it may sound, these contact lenses cover the entire whites of the eyes, so that the eye appears to be only one color--black.

Essentially then, one is left with an appearance of that of some otherworldly creature, a vampire, a monster, an alien even! The effect is at once startling, captivating, and thetrical; anyone who sees them is sure to do a double take!

Where to Shop

Extreme FX

You can purchase sclera contact lenses at several different online sites, including Extreme Fx, and while the convenience of purchasing your theatrical look online is enviable, the price, at $269.00, is not.

That said, however, it's virtually impossible to purchase sclera (named so because it covers the whites of the eyes; "sclera" is the technical term for the "whites" of the eye) for much cheaper than that.

Even though these contact lenses are pretty pricey, it may help to know that they are long lasting; a pair, worn occasionally, is said to last up to two years. In addition to the price, you'll also need to hand over your doctor's information, so that the site can verify whether or not you have a prescription since many people want to purchase these lenses for their dramatic look, but don't actually have a prescription for them.

Coastal Contacts

Another online shopping site worth investigating is Coastal Contacts. There you'll be able to purchase black sclera, but it will cost over $300.00. This is mostly due to the fact that you'll need to purchase for each eye separately, i.e., add the "right eye" and "left eye" lens into the cart separately.

The upside to this method, however, is that if you already own a pair of black sclera, but one lens is damaged, you can just purchase a replacement for that particular lens. This can potentially hold down your costs. If you are looking for custom made lenses, Coastal Contacts can help, but you'll need to tack on an additional week's worth of wait time. Note too that refunds and exchanges are not available here, as all sales are final.

Lens Mart

Lens Mart is yet another site you can visit, and it may be worth it as the lenses are a bit cheaper here at $145.95. However, as with Coastal Contacts, there are no exchanges or refunds, and all sclera purchases will need prescription verification.

Curious to See How They Look?

If you are contemplating purchasing a pair of these contact lenses, but aren't quite sure how they are going to look, it may be a good idea to view some pictures of them online. At Bork Web, you not only get a chance to view these lenses, but you can also read the back story of how the person wearing them felt about it (comfort, durability, etc).

Additionally, YouTube video is also uploaded so that you can take a look at how these contact lenses "wear" and look while someone is actually talking. A few pictures are also posted at Your Fantasy Costume, but they are a bit one the small side. However, you do get an accurate image of how these lenses appear once in the eye.

Additional Notes

Besides the enormous costs of these contacts lenses and the need for a prescription, it may also be helpful to know that these are large lenses- about the size of a quarter! Some people who have worn them report mild discomfort, but anecdotally, most say that the discomfort can be relieved by wearing the lenses for a short amount of time. Finally, note that these lenses are custom made (hence the need for a prescription) and as such, need to be fitted to each individual's eye.

Putting It All Together

To be sure, black sclera contact lenses are a dramatic and jaw-dropping look, and one that will look stunning at your next Halloween party. That said, this captivating look does not come cheap, and you won't be able to purchase them online without a prescription. All in all though, once you take a look at some of the pictures of folks actually wearing this look, you may decide that these inconveniences are well worth it!
