Designer Background

Burberry started up in 1856 England at the hands of Thomas Burberry when he was 21. By 1870, his drive for high quality products had landed him a rather large following. Later, Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Prince of Wales would become fans as well.

His interest in fine fabrics led him to create his own—garbardine—a “breathable, weatherproof and tearproof fabric” according to the Burberry homepage. That was in 1880. Just fifteen years later, Burberry (now Thomas Burberry & Sons) created what would be tweaked to become the modern trench coat. In 1914, after a few amendments, the trench coat came to life.

What we all recognize so well as a Burberry check came about in the 1920s. It lined trench coats and is still found on perfume bottles, clothing and accessories today.
