Celebrity Sunglasses Interview
From LoveToKnow Sunglasses
Most of us would love the opportunity to rub elbows with the stars. What if you got to help them choose their sunglasses? You could help them complement their face shape and help move the masses in the direction of the next "what's hot." Dori Stroll, Senior Public Relations Coordinator for Safilo USA and Solstice Sunglass Boutique, has personally fit several celebrities herself. LoveToKnow Sunglasses went to her for the scoop.
Faces and Events
You've fit celebrities with sunglasses in the past. Who have you fit? What were their favorite styles? Do you have any favorite celebrities you've been able to meet through your job?
We [Safilo USA and Solstice Sunglass Boutique] have fit thousands of celebrities at various events such as the Grammy's, American Music Awards and Critic's Choice Awards, to name a few. Our most recent celebrity fittings can be found on the Solstice Stores web site (in the event section).
Celebrities additionally love to shop in our Solstice stores. Sarah Jessica Parker, Sienna Miller, Eva Longoria, Chris Daughtry, Paris Hilton, Jeremy Piven, Usher, Amanda Bynes, Hilary and Haylie Duff, among many others, have all shopped at one or more of our Solstice Sunglass Boutique locations nationwide and appreciate the vast selection of designer brands we offer.
How the Perfect Fit Happens
When celebrities come to you for sunglasses, do they typically already have an idea of what they want, or do you get to recreate their image via their eyewear?
It's a little bit of both. Sometimes they know exactly what they want or like, but in many cases, they depend on our expertise to help them select the frame that looks and fits the best.
Any tips on choosing sunglasses based on face shape? Can you give comparisons such as, "If your face is shaped like < celeb name >'s, you'll look best in this shape"?
As a general rule of thumb, you should always choose a style that is opposite your face shape. For example, Jessica Simpson has a square-shaped face, so round and oval shaped frames complement her.
What about hair color and skin tone? Which colors work best for blondes, brunettes, redheads, etc?
Blondes and redheads should opt for lighter frames in neutral tones such as havana or brown. Brunettes can wear the ultra-dark, black glasses.
Would you say there's a shape or specific frame that looks good on just about everyone?
A classic Jackie-O shape will look good on almost all female face shapes--provided that the size of the frame is in proportion to your face shape. The frame front shouldn't extend off the peripheral of your face (unless you're Nicole Richie). Aviators are also universal and unisex, as they come in all shapes, sizes and materials. You just need to find one that fits your face shape and personality the best.
Celebrity Habits
What's the typical sunglasses purchase like for celebrities? Do they tend to buy one pair and love it, or do they come in for a new eyewear wardrobe and leave with five different pairs of sunglasses, for example, to cycle out?
With typically over 25 designer brands and over 1000 pairs to choose from in any given store, a celebrity shopping in Solstice cannot control themselves--they often buy at least 3-5 pairs at a time. Usher once snatched up 16 pairs in one visit!
When you're fitting a celebrity for sunglasses, do you fit them based on what's hot right now, or do the celebrities dictate what's hot by wearing certain frames in the media?
We often steer celebrities towards a certain brand, style or trend that we know a celebrity can make hot, as well as their own, overnight based on their star power. When celebrities are seen wearing a particular style, trend or designer, it provides instant credibility for the masses to feel comfortable wearing the same pair or something similar.
