Circle Lenses
From LoveToKnow Sunglasses
Circle lenses are all the rage in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, and they're catching on in North America too. LoveToKnow Sunglasses approached Amy Li, founder of Lens Circle to find out more about the trend that not only changes your eye color but makes them appear larger and doll-like too.
About Circle Lenses
LTK: Tell me a little bit about circle contact lenses.
AL: Circle contact lenses are one of the most popular trends in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. People use this type of lens to change the color of their eyes, just as they use lipstick to change the color of their lips or hair color to change the color of their hair. The difference between circle contact lenses and normal color contact lenses is the dark outer ring tinted in the area outside the iris of the eye which creates the appearance of larger eyes. Normal color contact lenses are tinted only in areas that cover the iris of the eye, therefore will not make your eyes look bigger.
LTK: Tell me about the popularity of circle contact lenses. Are they fairly new to North America?
AL: The popularity of circle lenses has boomed in most of Asia, with more than 800,000 teenage girls wearing the lenses for cosmetic purposes. Circle contacts are fairly new to North America, but just as with any new fashion trend, it just takes some time for people to adapt.
LTK: Are any of the lenses available in prescription strengths or are they for cosmetic use only?
AL: Currently, the lenses found on our site are all non-prescription lenses for cosmetic purposes only. We plan to bring in prescription lenses for certain styles by the beginning of 2010.
Buying and Caring for Lenses
LTK: What does the Geo seal on the bottles mean? How does the authentication code work?
AL: The Geo seal is a sticker developed by Geo Medical Co., Inc. (one of the most popular manufacturers of circle lenses) to check for the authenticity of their lenses. The seal was developed to prevent imitation lenses from being sold, mainly in China. When buying circle lenses, it is important that the lenses you order are authentic, because fake circle lenses not only look different than real ones, they can also be damaging to your eyes.
LTK: Do you have any tips for choosing the right lenses for your eyes (eye color, desired effect, etc)? Do they all work for dark and light eyes alike?
AL: Some colors are more noticeable than others. The Nudy series, 3-tone series and Twin series probably give the strongest effect in color change while other series such as the Angel series and Fresh Color series act as color enhancers to create subtle changes in eye color.
If you want your eyes to be more noticeable, you should choose colors that contrast from your natural skin tone or makeup, such as using brighter colors if you have a dark-toned skin. If you just want a subtle color change, you should choose colors to match with your makeup or natural eye color. It might seem awkward, but the majority of our customers choose colors that are the same as their natural eye color. The reason for this is because circle lenses not only change the color of a person's eyes, but also create a mystical glow through their unique designs. Some people just want to create the effect of bigger eyes.
LTK: What is the proper lens care for these? How long do they typically last and how long can you wear them per session?
AL: Many people do not know how to take care of their lenses properly. There is an instruction pamphlet included in every package to assist people with this. Taking proper care of your lenses is crucial because the better you take care of your lenses, the longer they will last. Another reason why you have to take care of your lenses is because it prevents you from getting any eye irritation or infections. This applies to contact lenses in general.
Circle lenses are extended wear contact lenses and have a usage cycle of one year. However, they are soft contact lenses, and are less durable than normal color lenses. If they are not treated properly, it is recommended to replace them every six months or so.
LoveToKnow Sunglasses would like to give a special thanks to Amy Li for taking time from her busy schedule to share her expertise with readers, and wishes her continued success at LensCircle.com.
