Clip On Sunglass Cases
From LoveToKnow Sunglasses
Clip on sunglass cases are an ideal place to store your clip on sunglasses while you travel (by keeping them in your purse or overnight bag), at night, in your car, or when you have your contacts in and don't need your eyeglasses. They can keep your clip ons from getting lost or broken by protecting them as a pouch within a larger case or as a smaller, hard shell case that stands alone.
Why Use Clip On Sunglass Cases
There are a few reasons to keep your clip on sunglass cases handy:
- Even if you have a scratch-resistant coating on your lenses, you can avoid creating deep gouges that coatings can't stand up against by keeping them in a case, whether it's just a soft pouch or a hard clamshell case.
- If you're going to be packing your clip ons, you store them in your glove compartment, or on the seat, where they run the risk of being sat on, you can use a clamshell case to protect them.
- Storing clip ons in your car could also cause a problem if they fall between the seats and get lost. They're small, thin, and can quite easily disappear. Keeping them in a case makes them easier to find and it also makes it harder for them to fall into a crevice.
- If you get the pouch type that fits inside of your regular eyeglass case (eyeglass and clip on sets typically come with this type of set-up), you can keep your clip ons conveniently with your eyeglasses when not in use. You'll never find yourself putting on your eyeglasses to drive and then wondering, "Now where did I put my sunglasses?"
Types of Cases for Clip Ons
Soft Pouch: These aren't ideal for protecting against much more than scratches since they're usually relatively small and, as the name suggests, soft enough to allow your clip ons to be bent if they're stored incorrectly. However, these often accompany clamshell cases that hold your eyeglasses when you purchase a set. They can then be stored together, but not connected. If you've lost one or both parts of your case, try contacting the manufacturer of the eyeglasses to see if you can purchase the cases directly from them.
Clamshell Case: This is like a traditional eyeglass case. However, it's smaller in size. In some situations, you may find yourself actually buying an eyeglass case that is designed with small frames in mind. It will suffice. As long as you can store it where you'd like to store it and it's hard enough to keep your clip ons from being crushed, it will work. You can generally pick these up wherever eyeglass accessories are sold. However, finding thin, sleek cases may prove more challenging than finding their bulkier counterparts.
Finding One
If your eyeglasses came with a clip but not a case, or if you lost the case, you can still purchase a separate one. Look for relatively small cases (about five inches long, less than one inch tall, and two to three inches wide). Here are a few sites to consider for your clip on sunglass case purchase:
- Polarized Optics has a Protective Hard Carrying Case (PHC #1) for $7.50 that measures 5.30 by 2.50 by .80 inches.
Keep in mind that you can use a regular clamshell eyeglass or sunglass case to house your clip ons in a pinch. However, you won't be able to comfortably fit a full-size eyeglasses case in your pocket like you could do with a case specifically designed to hold just the clip on.
- Sunglasses Giant has a small sunglasses case made of hard nylon with a felt lining. At the time of this writing, the price is $12.99, but regular price is $23.99. There is also a Microfiber Sunglasses Case for $5.99 ($9.99 regular price).
A Final Word
You aren't out of of luck, nor do you have to contact the manufacturer of your eyeglass/clip on set if you didn't receive a case or you lost the one you had. You do, however, need a case for your clip ons to prevent scratching, breakage, and sometimes misplacement.
