How Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses Got Started

Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses are synonymous with Italian style and elegance. And well they should be. As just one product of the famous style house, they've been gracing the faces of some of our best known celebrities for many years, and seem to become more popular as time goes by.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are the designers who give both their names and their sense of style and glamour to the brand. They launched the label in October 1985, with their first show coming at the Milano Collezioni show for new talents. Their first show under the Dolce & Gabbana name came the following year, with the ready-to-wear collection launching in 1988.

Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses didn’t come along until later, by which time the brand's accessories line was well established, selling high quality leather goods such as shoes and handbags. The designers also launched their diffusion line, D&G, offering more casual, ready-to-wear clothing and accessories.

Dolce & Gabbana Style

Dark glasses, movie star style and timeless glamour – those are the phrases which could be best used to describe Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses, and, indeed, the rest of the Dolce & Gabanna line. The look is big, dark and dramatic, with accessories such as rhinestones and diamontes adding to the glamorous feel of the sunglasses.

As you would expect, these sunglasses don't come cheap. A pair of basic glasses will usually cost in the region of $300, with more elaborate styles being more expensive. The more casual D&G line, however, is less expensive, with styles available from around $150.

The D&G Diffusion Line

D&G is an offshoot of the main Dolce & Gabbana brand – a collection of lower priced, ready-to-wear items which allow lovers of designer fashion to sample some Italian style without having to re-mortgage the house to do it.

Although D&G sunglasses are less expensive than their couture-line counterparts, they're no less stylish, and the quality of both lines shines through.

Recognising Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses

As with most designer items, the popularity and relative expense involved in owning a pair of genuine Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses means that there are a lot of fakes on the market. Both Dolce & Gabbana and D&G are copied and sold as the real thing, to unsuspecting shoppers who are simply looking to add a little glamour to their lives.

So, how do you recognise a genuine pair when you see them? The first clue is where you're buying your glasses from. Dolce & Gabbana glasses aren't sold at street markets, and generally won’t be available from your local store. You shouldn't expect to find a real pair for under $100, and most authentic glasses will be closer to the $200 mark – at least.

A good maxim to live by is that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Therefore, if you're offered a pair of cheap Dolce and Gabbanas for a ridiculously low price, they are probably fakes. To make sure your glasses are genuine, study the styles available at the Dolce & Gabbana website and look for Dolce and Gabanna concessions in department stores or other trusted retailers.
