Eyeglass Frame

From LoveToKnow Sunglasses

If you're feeling stifled by the sunglass styles available, consider looking at eyeglass frames. By broadening your horizons in this way, you open up a whole world of frame options.

Recycle Old Eyeglass Frames

Do you have an old eyeglass frame you love, but don't want to wear day after day for yet another year? Looking for an update on your office look? Also looking for a new pair of sunglasses? Switch it up.

You can update your look all around, get more mileage out of those frames you love but don't want to wear the same way you've been wearing them and save money, all at the same time. First, you must get your eyes examined to see if your prescription has changed.

Prescription Has Changed

If your eyeglass prescription has changed:

  • You can pick a new pair of frames with clear lenses to wear to the office, around your house and any other time you're indoors or the sun's not out.
  • Once you pick your new pair of everyday eyeglass frames, take your old pair in and purchase new lenses only--with your new prescription. Have them tinted, and an anti-reflective coating applied to the lenses.

Prescription Hasn't Changed

  • If your prescription hasn't changed, you can still have your old lenses tinted and the anti-reflective coating added on. You will save money because you don't have to buy new lenses for this pair, only your new eyeglass frames.
  • If your prescription hasn't changed and you just tint your old lenses, you can buy a fresh new pair to wear daily--whenever sunglasses aren't needed.

Bigger is Better

Variety's great, especially when you can figure out a way to use an old item you love to create a new, hot look. Remember, the larger the frame, the better. If you've been sporting a small frame, you won't get the UV protection benefits of a big sunglasses.

New Eyeglass Frames

It's no big deal if you want to say, "Sayonara" to your old eyeglass frames and never look at them again--as sunglasses or otherwise. It's also no big deal if you can't find any sunglasses you want to buy off the rack at the Sunglass Hut or any other sunglasses retailer (though with all the designer styles and replicas out there, it's hard to imagine). Go to your local optical shop and choose a pair of eyeglass frames.

Any pair of eyeglass frames can be turned into a pair of sunglasses whether you need vision correction or not. Just ask for plain ol' plastic lenses--lenses with no prescription--and they can still tint them and add the anti-reflective coating. If you'd like to spend the extra cash, you can even opt for polarized lenses. Photochromic lenses sound good in theory, but since they don't work well inside cars, they may not be the best option.

Side note: If you're buying prescription sunglasses, you aren't restricted to the optical shop where you had your eyes examined, though quite a few people don't seem to realize the freedom they have. If your eye doctor didn't give you a prescription as you left the office, you can request one. Some doctors like to hand them directly to their in-office opticians so that they may help you from there.
