Fishing Prescription Sun Glasses

From LoveToKnow Sunglasses

Fishing prescription sun glasses can do a lot of things at once. They can give you the clear vision you're used to with your regular glasses, block glare so you can see into the water more effectively, and give you the sun protection you'll need when you're spending hours down by the lake, pond, river, or out on the ocean.

The Benefits of Fishing Prescription Sunglasses

One perk to wearing fishing prescription sun glasses instead of your regular glasses or sunglasses is the fact that they are usually polarized. That helps cut out the glare of the sun when it hits the water. In turn, that allows you to more accurately find good spots for fishing. Wearing this type of glasses also greatly reduces the eye strain you could otherwise experience.

Another benefit is being able to combine your prescription with a pair of sunglasses. Some people do not enjoy the feel of wearing polarized wraparound sunglasses over their regular glasses for extended periods of time. If you're in the minimalist camp, you'll enjoy the feel of a single pair of glasses that combine your vision needs with the anti-glare properties of fishing sunglasses. You can have fishing sunglasses custom made to fit your prescription needs whether you wear single vision, bifocals (line or no-line), or even trifocals.

Get Your Sunglasses

You can go to your local optical shop and have your fishing sunglasses custom made with your prescription or you can shop online to find just the style and price you're hoping for. You will still need a current prescription to order, so if you have not had an eye exam in over a year, you will probably have to schedule one first. You can obtain your prescription from the optometrist when you go for your eye exam. If you last exam was less than a year ago, you should be able to get a copy of the one in your file from someone at the front desk (or the optician if you ordered your eyeglasses there last).

If you have your fishing glasses custom made, here are a few things to make sure you're getting:

  • Your accurate prescription, including the distance between your pupils so that the prescription is lined up correctly for your proportions in the lenses (you'll need to find your pupillary distance yourself if you are ordering online).
  • Polarized lenses (generally amber or gray, and often in polycarbonate for extra durability).
  • 100 percent UV protection.
  • Large lenses are best because they will block more light and provide more UV protection for the skin around your eyes. Wrap styles are even better because they offer more protection from the sides.
  • Comfort. It's difficult to know how comfortable a frame will be when you order online. If you order a pair and you do not like the way the nose pads or temples feel, you do have the option of looking for replacement parts that feel better on your skin. You can shop for your own if you're handy with an eyeglass repair kit or visit your local eyeglass repair shop. Another thing to consider where comfort is concerned is simply having them adjusted to your facial structure. An optical shop should be able to do that for a minimal fee. If you purchase your eyeglasses from an optical shop, you may still need them adjusted again when you pick up the finished product. Try them on before you leave.

Other Options

If you don't think fishing prescription sun glasses are right for you, there are a couple of other options:

  • Wearing contact lenses with a regular pair of polarized sunglasses
  • Purchasing sunglasses that fit over your regular glasses. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes, feature a wrap style, and usually contain polarized lenses.
