Full Eye Contact Lenses

From LoveToKnow Sunglasses

Full eye contact lenses, or sclera lenses, can give a very dramatic effect and are generally used as part of a costume or clubbing gear. They are not meant for extended wear.

Types of Full Eye Contact Lenses

Full eye contact lenses are available in a myriad of designs and behave similarly to regular soft contact lenses. You can get plain black lenses, mirrored lenses, bull's eyes, vampire eyes, and more. Just as the name suggests, these lenses really do fit over the whites of the eyes as well as the irises. That means you can distort the image of your eye, giving them a cat eye appearance, for example. You can buy them pre-made from a number of retailers or choose to have them custom made with your prescription.

No matter what style you choose, the effect will be so unusual, you're certain to get stares and second glances. You may even startle a few of your friends if they are not expecting to see lenses when they look into your eyes. Here are a few designs that are available:

  • Black
  • Demon
  • Cat eyes
  • Almost any solid color you would like, some sheer enough to show your iris and pupil through
  • Scarecrow
  • Risen dead/zombie
  • Jagged teeth
  • White out
  • Red (can be used as vampire lenses)

Sometimes sclera lenses can run a few hundred dollars each, so be sure to ask yourself (or the retailer) how often you will wear them and how often you can wear the lenses before you need a fresh pair. These lenses tend to be pricey, especially when they are custom made! They are undeniably an investment, so shop around before making a decision.

When to Wear Them

While you should not wear full eye contact lenses for more than a few hours at a time, you can enjoy them during special events. Wear them:

  • On Halloween
  • At certain clubs or parties
  • As part of a costume
  • In a theatrical atmosphere, perhaps for a movie you and your friends are putting together
  • Cosplay events

Caring for Your Sclera Lenses

Special effect lenses are not much different from regular lenses when it comes to care. You'll still need to rinse them with an all-purpose solution, soak them, and always remember to wash your hands before you put them in or take them out.

And as always, if your lenses cause redness or irritation, promptly remove them. If the problem continues, seek the assistance of an eye care professional. If you have never used sclera lenses before, it would be wise to consult with them before choosing a pair.

Buy Yours

You will still need a prescription for this type of lens, even if you do not need a prescription. You can purchase lenses at:

  • Vision Direct: You won't find the largest selection available here, but there are a few gems, such as the popular black sclera lenses that many people like to use as part of a Riddick costume. There are also Anime Fire Fighter, Anime Expressionless Fighter, and Anime Scarecrow.
  • Fashion Contact Lenses: There is a fairly large selection of sclera lenses here. You'll find blue, green, yellow, and black lenses as well as some that are not single colors. Choose from S Uchiha, Itachi, Raze, Demon Freddy, Cerbarus, and El Depredador. They state that you can wear your lenses for up to a year after opening as long as you care for them properly. Check their details for more information.
  • Coastal Contacts: This is another special effect full eye contact wonderland. You can get Jagged Teeth, Goliath, Scarecrow, Zabos, Risen-Dead, Griffin, Harpie, Ouch, and more.

Remember that custom lenses can take up to six weeks to prepare, so please plan ahead when you make your order. Also, be aware that the prices you see on the pages may be for single lenses—not pairs—so look carefully at the descriptions before ordering.

Sclera lenses are a way to add a lot of drama to a costume or event.
