Popular Shapes, Styles and Technologies In Men's Sunglasses
Men's sunglasses have come a long way! Check out the newest styles and technology:
- Aviators look incredibly sexy on the chiseled face of a handsome man, and can take an average Joe to an intriguing individual in the two seconds it takes to slip on a pair of men's sunglasses.
- Wraps (usually sports styles) are everywhere in men's sunglasses and often come with mirrored or polarized lenses. Another plus: they're great for protecting your eyes from the sun's rays that like to sneak around the sides of other styles
- Big frames are popular in men's sunglasses, especially for those who need bifocals, trifocals or progressives and are choosing a regular frame to put a tinted, prescription lens into.
- Flexible frames come in two varieties--spring-hinge legs that bend out to the sides instead of breaking with pressure, and those frames made of flexible material all over; you can literally tie the legs in knots. These are great for those notorious for breaking their glasses, or falling asleep with them on.
- Titanium is another lifesaver for those who break their frames frequently. It's the strongest material a frame can be made out of, and it's also non-corrosive. Men with metal allergies often go for titanium frames because they tend to cause less irritation. There also seems to be a larger selection of titanium frames for men than women. The non-corrosive factor is especially important with sunglasses, because you'll be wearing them outside, and chances are, you'll be sweating.
Clip On Sunglasses and Photochromic Lenses for Men
For men who don't like to carry around two pairs of glasses--a pair with clear lenses and a pair with tinted lenses--there's a solution. Two solutions, actually, have found their way into men's sunglasses.
Clip Ons: The good thing about clip on sunglasses is, the tinted part easily slips into a shirt pocket, or even a pants pocket (just don’t sit down on them!). They're smaller than a whole second pair of sunglasses, yet easier to keep up with. That's great because men don't get the same luxury as women--a purse. You can still choose from the magnetic type or the actual "clip" type you buy in drugstores. The clip-ons generally still offer the appropriate UV protection so your eyes stay safe.
Photochromic lenses are another great option because they leave your hands and your pockets free! They offer UV protection, and change from clear to dark when you step outside. The only downside to photochromic lenses is that they don't work as well inside vehicles, so they're not ideal for driving. But hey, you can leave a second pair of polarized sunglasses there. You still won't get stuck shuffling around two pairs of glasses walking to and from your car in a parking lot on a bright day, for example. Just switch back to your photochromics before you step out of your car; the lenses will turn dark gray or amber when you're outside, and return to clear rapidly when you get inside the store.
Prescription Lenses
As mentioned above, there are such things as prescription sunglasses. You can even get them in different colors, gradients, or polarized styles. If you're a fan of the sporty styles, you can even have prescription inserts put into those. Just choose your glasses and have the lenses tinted, UV protection added and an anti-reflective coating put on (putting it on the backs of the lenses reduces glare better than putting it on the front, so ask if this is an option at your local optical shop). Since men--especially older men--tend to choose quite large frames, be prepared to pay extra for the oversized lenses if you're having your prescription put in. The habit of choosing large frames works to your advantage in this case, since your eyes will be better protected from the sun, so the extra fee is worth it.
Real Men (and Celebs) Wearing Styles We Adore
This is for inspiration's sake, since most of us are visual creatures. It will help to see who has a face shape similar to yours and then choose similar sunglasses once you find a match you like. So here are a few pictures to get you started on your search for men's sunglasses:

Though lots of men go for angular shapes, here's a rounded style; these look great, too, and help balance out a very angular face.
Aviator styles are everywhere, and have been for a while! They're classics.
