All About Oakley Sunglasses
They've been around for decades, but Oakley sunglasses are still every bit as stylish and fashionable now as they were way back in the 70s, when the brand launched. Styles may have changed hugely since then, but Oakley's dedication to quality remains the same, and is one of the main reasons for the brand's continued popularity.
For such a well know sunglasses brand, Oakley didn't actually intend to make sunglasses at all. The brand is firmly rooted in sports, and owner Jim Jannard only turned his attention to sunglasses after successfully designing a motocross handgrip. Staying with the motocross world, his next design was for a pair of goggles suitable for bikers. These became so popular that Jannard decided to create sunglasses especially for sportspeople, working on the basic design principles of strength, function and style .
The glasses which were the result of that first journey into the world of sunglasses design fulfilled all three requirements, and Jannard named the line "Eyseshades". Although originally designed for mainly practical purposes, the shades came packed in a stylish box, and this, combined with their fashionable design, made them an instant hit.
The first Eyeshades were available in one color only, and it wasn't until Tour de France champion, Greg Lemond, enquired about the possibility of purchasing the glasses in different colors that Jannard realised the true potential of what he had created. Today, Oakley sunglasses are still worn by cyclists, but the brand has also gained much more mainstream appeal, being selected as the sunglasses of choice by fashion fanatics all over the world.
The Technical Bit
Unlike many high fashion brands, Oakley sunglasses have been designed to offer the maximum protection and endurance. The frames are created using C5 – a composite metal which is extremely strong, and able to stand up to temperature changes as well as other wear and tear. This is particularly important for Tour de France cyclists, such as Oakley fan Greg Lemond, but for those of us who are interested in Oakleys purely for their aesthetic properties, it also means that the glasses will last a long time, and be a great investment.
In addition to being lightweight and durable, the company have also designed what they call Unobtanium Earsocks, which make the legs of the glasses extremely comfortable, and able to remain in place even if you work up a sweat.
Sunglasses Style
Unlike the original Eyeshades, Oakley sunglasses now come in a wide range of styles, including full rim, half rim and rimless. Most of these styles can be viewed at the Oakley website, where you'll also find a vast range of other products, such as goggles, watches, bags, and even shoes, all bearing the Oakley brand. For those who like to wear Oakely all year round, not just when the sun comes out, there's also a range of prescription eyewear designed with the same flair and creativity as Oakley's sunglasses.Where to Buy Oakley Sunglasses
