Square Hippie Sunglasses

From LoveToKnow Sunglasses

Hippies would never want to be called square, man, but square hippie sunglasses are actually pretty "hip." You can generally find hippie sunglasses with brightly colored lenses alongside the darker gray and amber lenses also available in more traditional sunglasses.

Hippie sunglasses are groovy, baby.

Hippie sunglasses are also pretty small, generally, so if you have a small face, they could be just what you need to create proportion and interest for your facial features. In most cases, too, these frames will be made of wire rather than thick plastic, and will be fairly lightweight. Ready to check them out? That's all we needed to hear. It's time to get groovy.

Finding Square Hippie Sunglasses

As cool as they are, finding square hippie sunglasses could present a challenge. Check boutiques and mall stores like Spencer's to see what you can dig up. There are also thrift stores and dollar stores that sometimes carry unusual sunglasses styles in funky colors. If you have a hippie-inspired shop nearby that sells incense, old band t-shirts, and hemp jewelry, check there, too. Keep in mind, these sunglasses (from any of these stores or shops) may only be for fashion and not for adequate UV protection. Don't just blindly count on them to protect your eyes if they don't say they will.

The square shape is more challenging to come by than round, for example. Here are a few stores that offer hippie sunglasses in other shapes:

  • Halloween Unlimited, where you can get some sunglasses for $3.29 but they probably won't protect your eyes from the sun.
  • Caufield's Novelty is another place that offers hippie sunglasses for a low, low price--$1.59—but they'll be for looks only.

Hippie Sunglasses in the Media

Austin Powers could be held accountable for hippie sunglasses showing back up on the fashion scene. You may have trouble picturing John Lennon's face without a pair of hippie sunglasses perched on his nose. Since the 1960s, and now in the present, hippie sunglasses have been hanging out. They'll probably keep turning up in movies and on the streets even if they never make it back to mainstream. Who knows, though, some of the Who's Who of Hollywood may just decide to bring them back full force.

Who Wears Them Best

Answer yes or no to the following questions:

  1. Do you own a lot of tie-dyed clothing?
  2. Do you wear it outside the house, for activities other than painting your porch?
  3. Is your vocabulary peppered with words like dude, man, groovy, far out, and psychadelic?
  4. Have you bought a new pair of jeans—not from a thrift store—in the past decade?
  5. Do you own a Volkswagen van?
  6. Is it painted more than one color?
  7. Does your hair have a specific "style"?

If you answered yes to questions 1, 2, 3, 5, or 6, and/or no to 4 or 7, chances are, you already have a pair of square hippie sunglasses. If not, you should run out and find some now to complete your look. You will wear hippie sunglasses than anyone else. They are your fashion calling.

If you find yourself in tailored clothes, even on the weekends, and every hair has a place (and is in that place, coiffed and sprayed to oblivion), or if you drive a Porsche and speak with proper English at all times, travel down to the Sunglass Hut for a wider variety of sunglasses, or check out your local optical shop for a pair of designers. You can even have them made just how you want.

Peace out.
