Theatrical Contact Lenses
From LoveToKnow Sunglasses
Theatrical contact lenses are sometimes referred to simply as crazy lenses, special effects lenses, or Halloween lenses, and they're not just for theatre use. You can wear them as part of a Halloween or Cosplay costume, clubbing attire, or any time you want your eyes to make a statement.
Types of Theatrical Contact Lenses
From almost natural to completely wacky, theatrical contact lenses come in all types, colors, and styles. You can cover just the pupil and iris areas of the eye, as regular contact lenses do. Another option is to get sclera lenses that cover all of that plus the whites of the eyes for an especially unique—and often creepy—look. Some of the available designs include:
- Cat eyes (various colors)
- Angel eyes
- Wolf
- Special sci-fi and fantasy characters such as Darth Vader, Sith, Twilight characters,
- White out or black out (available in regular and sclera lenses)
- Stitches
- Frosted
- Patchwork
- Vampires
- Colored lenses that almost look natural, but aren't, such as sunbursts, halos, and more
- Fun lenses, such as smiley faces or daisies
- Glow in the dark lenses and lenses that glow under black lights (great for raves)
Some theatrical lenses are available in prescription strengths while others are only available without any vision correction (these are often referred to as "plano" lenses). Also, please keep in mind that rigid gas permeable lenses are usually not available in theatrical styles; almost all of the novelty or theatrical contacts available are soft lenses.
Buy Yours
If you aren't lucky enough to have a theatrical store in your vicinity and your eye care provider doesn't offer contact lenses quite as wild as the ones you're hoping for, don't worry! You can still order online.
- Coastal Contacts: There are plenty of theatrical contact lenses to choose from here, and the beauty of these lenses lies in the construction. No color will touch your eyes, so it's less likely that you'll experience irritation. The color is sandwiched between layers of the lenses rather than painted on the front or back.
- 9mm SFX: This site stays on top of the trends. In addition, they make sure that you do, too. As soon as you enter the site, you'll see a list of what's new. If they've added a new design, you'll know. If a representative from the company has participated in a newspaper interview, you'll know that, too.
- Cosplay Lab: You guessed it, this site will be of special interest to those who are into Cosplay. If you aren't, however, that doesn’t' mean you should stay away from this site. They have quite a selection! Keep in mind that these lenses are hand-painted and may take up to a month to receive. The site states that with occasional use, you will be able to use these lenses for roughly one year.
- Haunted Eyes: Here is another site with a wide selection of crazy contact lenses. You can also order custom lenses. Some styles include Camo, Necromancer, G-Virus, and Biohazard.
Proceed with Caution
Please remember to use caution when purchasing and wearing your contact lenses. Look for lenses that are listed as FDA-approved. If you experience any redness or discomfort, please discontinue the wear of your lenses. If the problem persists, make an appointment with your eye care provider.
In fact, if a contact lens provider does not require a prescription—even for plano lenses—they are not abiding by FDA guidelines. All contact lenses are now considered medical devices and do require a prescription. This enables the seller to be sure that you have been fitted for the lenses and that you know how to care for them properly.
To care for your lenses, always wash your hands before touching them to take them out or put them in. Store them appropriately, per the directions of your eye care specialist. Never share contact lenses with anyone else.
